Facing down resistance to reading Science and Health

Over the decades, my relationship to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy has been characterized by a degree of neglect. Only in the last few years have I really felt the heart burning about that book, which is natural to a spiritually active Christian Scientist.

I don’t mean that I’ve ignored the book. Rare is the day that hasn’t included using it for my individual prayer and treatment of others. There are extensive files on my computer of topics researched in Science and Health. I also have many notebooks full of handwritten passages that have guided and sustained me over the years. This book has formed my relationship to the Bible, bringing forth a greater connection with its characters and stories. Certainly Science and Health has been the foundation for my teaching and healing practice.

The resistance that has now been overcome relates to reading the book through consecutively. Through prayer, I’ve learned that God’s grace has instilled in me a natural desire to read the book for its own sake, instead of just searching to solve a problem.
