A special gift

When I decided to pursue Christian Science Primary class instruction, I was living on my family’s farm, attending college, and caring for my mother, who was ill. My mom had gone through Primary class ten years prior, and the impact on her thought and life had been noticeably uplifting. Now, faced with this situation, she was calmly handling the case through Christian Science.

I wanted to feel that same kind of confidence in my own practice of Christian Science. After several days of prayer, I had a strong feeling that I should write my mother’s teacher and make arrangements to enter her next Primary class. Looking back, this was clearly an inspired decision. I had never met this woman. I didn’t interview her or other teachers first. I trusted God’s guidance entirely.

I asked my father and grandmother to care for my mother during my upcoming absence, but my dad said he couldn’t do it because he was taking “some Christian Science classes.” To our surprise, we both had applied to take Primary class instruction from the same teacher at the same time! My grandmother agreed to care for my mother on her own, and my father and I drove 500 miles together to get to class. I saw this as proof of God’s care, as my grandmother had initially been uncomfortable with the idea of running the household herself for an extended period, but then realized she was quite capable of giving my mother the care she needed—and I did not have a car or the driving experience to make the trip by myself.
