Hip pain vanishes
In one of the By-Laws of the Manual of The Mother Church, Mary Baker Eddy states, “It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind” (p. 42).
This By-Law was a rousing call to action for me a while ago when I was serving as First Reader in my local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I had been preparing readings for a Wednesday evening testimony meeting on the theme of understanding versus belief, but I was having trouble focusing on the work and bringing it to completion. Along with this mental challenge, there was pain in my hips, so that I was not able to go from a standing position to a sitting position, and vice versa, without great difficulty.
I had never experienced such limitation before, and a slew of fearful suggestions presented themselves: that I wouldn’t be able to continue my work as First Reader, that my ability to walk and do normal activities would be curtailed, that I would become a burden to my family, and that I would not be able to enjoy life.
