Healed by reading the Christian Science textbook
One weekend last fall, I woke up feeling very ill. Despite being worn out from a busy week, I prayed for myself throughout the day, and I was able to participate in my regularly scheduled activities.
When I woke the following morning, the outward symptoms hadn’t changed. By that time I had not eaten in over 24 hours. Instead of being discouraged, I knew from my study of Christian Science that sickness has no actual cause or timeline because God is the only cause and creator (see Genesis 1). I also rejected the idea that I had broken any so-called laws of health, because I knew that the sensation of nausea was the objectified misunderstanding that there could be a power opposed to God. At that moment I needed to change my thought in order to realize and prove my perfect state of health.
A passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy guided me that afternoon as I persisted in praying for myself: “Continue to read, and the book will become the physician, allaying the tremor which Truth often brings to error when destroying it” (p. 422). I followed this instruction and opened to the chapter in Science and Health titled “Science, Theology, Medicine,” letting the words permeate my thought.
