Intense pain healed
Over the years I have had numerous experiences in which I was tempted to look for answers materially—when I have been confronted with a picture of illness, or of discordant relationships, or of limitation of good somewhere in my life. But as I release material concepts, spiritual evidence of God’s goodness and harmony becomes clearer.
Looking for proof of God’s love in matter is just like “doubting Thomas” needing material verification of Jesus’ resurrection (see John 20:25). In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Nothing but a display of matter could make existence real to Thomas” (pp. 317–318). By contrast, looking only to God for answers increases our spiritual growth and brings healing.
Last year I experienced steady pain that increased over a period of several months, until it grew so strong that I was bedridden for several days. My husband and son thought I should go to a hospital, but I asked to be taken to a Christian Science nursing facility about an hour from our home, and my husband agreed.
