Healing prayer during pregnancy
Originally written in Spanish, this testimony appeared in the April 2013 German, French,
Spanish, and Portuguese editions of The Herald of Christian Science.
I became acquainted with Christian Science many years ago when I was three months pregnant with my first child. During a visit with the physician at that time, my husband and I were told that the child was going to be born deformed. He gave us the choice to have an abortion, which was legal to perform (where we were) up to the fifth month of pregnancy.
This news was shocking to us. I remember that the doctor left us alone for a few moments, so we could talk and possibly sign our consent for the abortion. My husband was very clear and told me, “Flor, this child is a spiritual idea of God; he is a child of God and is perfect.” I told him that I didn’t want to have an abortion, and he assured me, “We will go to a Christian Science church and you will know the truth.” My husband has been a student of Christian Science since childhood.
So we did. As I walked into the church, I read a sign on the wall that moved me. It read, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need,” and below it, “Mary Baker Eddy” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494 ). Another sign read, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free,” and below it, “Christ Jesus” (John 8:32 ).
I met an English-speaking Christian Science practitioner there, and although I didn’t understand the language very well, we were able to communicate and agreed that she would pray and give me treatment for my pregnancy. She also suggested some citations from the Bible and Science and Health.
As soon as I got home, I began to study and to get acquainted with God and my relationship with Him, in a different way from what I had been used to. I felt very happy and loved because I was being introduced, through writings both from the Bible and Science and Health, to a loving God. I started to change the way I was thinking. The fear and anguish ceased. This was an awakening for me.
I remember that the practitioner suggested I think about this passage from Psalms, “Thou art my portion, O Lord: … Thy hands have made me and fashioned me” (119:57, 73 ). This helped me understand that we are spiritual ideas, as Mrs. Eddy’s writings explain, and that God is the only Mind. He is the infinite, supreme God, and He is everywhere; He is the All-in-all, who embraces us with His deep love. This study completely changed the way I knew God.
I continued studying these books, knowing that God is good and the source of all being, who cannot produce any physical or moral deformity. I saw that we don’t have to fear material laws, but focus only on Spirit, God, who is our Life, our being, the inexhaustible source of all the light that illumines and resolves every human need. “… God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All” (Science and Health, p. 17 ).
The pregnancy followed a normal course. I didn’t see the doctor again until childbirth. People in the hospital expected the child to have physical problems. However, when my son was born, they were astonished because the child was big, beautiful, and perfect. The doctors checked him very thoroughly because they couldn’t believe he was completely healthy. None of the diagnosed complications came true. My husband and I cried with happiness that day.
Today, that child is a strong young man about to graduate from college.
I am infinitely grateful to Christian Science because it has awakened me to know that God is always with us, and that we are at one with Him. As the Master, Christ Jesus, said, “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30 ).
