No longer depressed

Many years ago, when my mother had become severely depressed and was not herself, it seemed right to have her come and live with us. I was an only child, happily married with a family of six children. We were living in a large home that had a small spare room on the first floor, where Mother could be comfortable, so we had her move in. My husband is also a Christian Scientist, and we were in total agreement about having her come to live with us.

Talking with the Christian Science practitioner who was praying for my mother, I said that I knew it was right to have her with us but wondered if it was OK for the children to see their grandmother like this. His response was immediate and firm. He said, “Would you deny them seeing her healing?” He reassured me that we could safely leave everything to “God’s disposal of events” (Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 281). It seems I was so focused on the problem that I was blinded to the fact that she could and would be healed!

Our children never seemed to notice the change in their grandmother. They would wander into her room from time to time and visit with sweet smiles and conversation. We all continued to acknowledge her as a perfect child of God, knowing that nothing could enter our home that was beyond God’s control.
