Painful finger back to normal
One morning several months ago, I woke up with an intensely painful, discolored, swollen finger.
I immediately relied on prayer, protesting in thought: The one living God is reigning! Then came an angel message I knew from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action” (p. 283 ). This I understood to mean that God, Mind, is the source of all liveliness, activity, and mobility.
I saw the whole situation as a lie that did not touch my real spiritual self in the least. God never made a painful, discolored, swollen finger, and whatever wasn’t made by Him could not be a part of me. I am the image and likeness of God and therefore spiritual and not material.
I opened my Christian Science Hymnal and came across these lines in Hymn No. 324 : “Take my hands, and let them move / At the impulse of Thy love” (Frances R. Havergal, adapted). That idea filled my thoughts with love, and I was able to go about my day, completing everything I had to do without discomfort in my finger. When I washed my hands later, I suddenly realized that there was nothing wrong, and I recognized at once that nothing had ever been wrong or ever would be. Just where the problem seemed to have been, the revelation of divine Love was in action. The pain, discoloration, and swelling had disappeared. Healing had taken place.
I am deeply grateful for having found the wonderful teachings of Christian Science, and I am learning daily that God is my life and my help in any situation—“a very present help in trouble,” as the Bible tells us (Psalms 46:1 ). Thanks to God for the precious gift of Christian Science!
