Free from sore throat
Originally written in Portuguese, this testimony appears in the May 2013 Portuguese, Spanish, French, and German editions of The Herald of Christian Science.
One night, I woke up with a sore and swollen throat and I could hardly breathe. I became frightened because the symptoms were very aggressive.
As a student of Christian Science, I always lean on ideas from the Bible and the writings of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. On occasions of distress, these ideas act as a remedy, for they bring strength and healing.
On that occasion, the following passage from the Bible came to my thought: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5, 6 ). In fact, all problems can be resolved when we trust God’s unerring guidance.
I started repeating prayerfully to myself: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.” Suddenly, an inspiration came to me, as if I heard an incisive voice asking: “But who is this Lord whom you trust?” An answer also came very clearly to my consciousness, and I realized that this Lord is the one and only God, the One who is never far, but is omnipresent, and to whom I am always connected. “For in him we live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28 ).
We can feel God’s presence every time we lift our thought to Him, recognizing and affirming our perfect unity with Him, as Mrs. Eddy so well stated: “It is neither Science nor Truth which acts through blind belief, nor is it the human understanding of the divine healing Principle as manifested in Jesus, whose humble prayers were deep and conscientious protests of Truth,—of man’s likeness to God and of man’s unity with Truth and Love” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 12 ). Through prayer we grasp an awareness firmly grounded on the understanding of the close relationship between the Creator and His perfect and harmonious creation, in His spiritual likeness. From this awareness comes our dominion over the material senses, which suggest that disease and disharmony are real, when they are not.
I pondered these spiritual truths and recognized that I had never been separated from God. At that moment, I realized that I could trust the all-loving care of God, my Lord, to find healing. In a matter of minutes I calmed down and fell asleep. I spent the rest of the night at peace. On the following day, there was no trace of a sore and inflamed throat. The difficulty in breathing had also vanished. This happened in 2009, and the symptoms have not returned.
This experience proved to me that everyone has the divinely bestowed authority to demonstrate the supremacy of divine Life, Truth, and Love, which certainly overcome evil in every form.
