What's most important: 'God loves you'

Thanks be to God for his gift that is too wonderful for words.

—II Corinthians 9:15, New Century Version

Before our marriage, my future husband and I had been struggling with a problem: We had different religious affiliations and we wanted to have children, but how should they be baptized? I deeply studied the New Testament looking for answers.

One night I felt especially down, and I earnestly and humbly prayed that God would show me the way. I was ready to accept God’s answer.

The next day, I had an unexpected visit from a friend I had not seen in a while. During our conversation we got to talking about God, and he told me about Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and gave me the phone number of a Christian Science practitioner, whom I could turn to for help through prayer.

I made an appointment with the practitioner. At the time I’d had a swollen knee for two days and was barely able to walk, and in addition, I was suffering from an inflamed pharynx. As I rang the doorbell at her house and she opened it, a great love enveloped me, which I cannot describe. I then told her what was bothering me about having children. But we didn’t talk about illnesses.

The most important thing was her words, “God loves you.” That was new for me, because I had not felt very loved. Overjoyed, I went home, and again and again I said, “God loves me.” My leg was free of pain and my throat was clear. The next day I was completely healed.

The practitioner had given me a copy of Science and Health, and I read it every day, trying to apply everything as I was able to understand it. At the time I worked in a pharmacy, and my colleagues noticed the change in me, and that I wasn’t taking the medication I had previously taken anymore. Nothing could ruffle my feathers because I knew that God is ever present and all encompassing. I felt love for everything and everyone I encountered. And I was not afraid anymore to walk through unlit rows of houses on my way home. I had gotten to know a God who is Love alone, and as it says in the Bible, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31 ).

The problem with our faiths was not solved right away. My fiancé and I decided to get married in his church for the sake of his parents, but without making any concessions to this church. Other than that, I endeavored to apply what I was learning and to follow what the practitioner said: “Prove it!” (She later became my teacher for Primary class instruction in Christian Science.)

Half a year after I started reading Science and Health and applying the rules of spiritual healing it contains, I found that I was cured of many conditions that had been medically diagnosed. Bronchial asthma, a slipped disc, migraine, varicose veins, abdominal pain, and neuritis were all healed through prayer and have not recurred since.

My husband also became interested in Christian Science. Soon we were regularly attending the Church of Christ, Scientist, in our town. He and I agreed to raise our children in Christian Science. Obeying the divine laws in the Bible and in Science and Health had a positive effect on everything in our lives.

It was not always easy, but over the years our relatives began to accept our faith more. Today, we have friendly relationships with most of them.

I had found the most wonderful thing that I could find: the Science of Christ—a Science that you have to study to grasp the truths about God and His creation. I have now been working at it for over three decades and it has been a joyous work!

I have experienced many more beautiful healings and am unspeakably grateful to God for lovingly directing me to Christian Science.
