Letters

On the day I received the January 14 & 21, 2013, Sentinel, I was feeling overwhelmed and could not even concentrate enough to read the Christian Science Bible Lesson, so I grabbed the new Sentinel hoping for peace of some kind. The article by Diane S. Staples, “A God’s eye-view,” made the unreality of every discord so clear to me that I experienced a healing (that same day) of a long-standing physical problem. It was not life-threatening, but was troublesome and irritating. It became so clear to me that we’re eternal and the problem isn’t. I was on my knees thanking God for this wonderful truth of our real and only being. I have reread this article many times since, and it never fails to encourage and enlighten. I thank all who work to bring us the Christian Science publications in print and online.

As a grateful reader of the Sentinel, I have loved the stories and wisdom that has filled its pages and brought me many moments of relief and inspiration. However, I am disappointed with the new design. I waited through a few issues to see if my impression changed, but unfortunately, I still feel bummed when I flip through the pages. I miss the color, photos, and graphics that were so inviting, warm, and energizing. They added grace and inspiration, and often conveyed a story independent of words or just enhanced the experience. I also miss the editor introduction to the enclosed articles and the picture of who is welcoming us to the magazine. I realize the content of words and ideas is of the same high quality. However, without the visual beauty, the pages have become sterile and indistinct to me, and even the cover with its image is formal and boring and no longer captivates me from its arrival so that I want to immediately sit down to read. I know that everyone has their own need from products, and some enjoy the focus on just the words. Personally, it no longer feels as welcoming as the previous design or satisfies my need for a pleasant, warm escape. I would truly appreciate it if some of those elements could be brought back.
