Pray we must

[“My prayers for Syria,” Anne Melville, September 2, 2013, Sentinel]

Your wonderful article is a very helpful guide as it has felt very overwhelming to know how to go about praying for Syria, and pray we must!

Many applications

[“Spirituality and sports,” August 20 Sentinel audio chat with Jan Keeler]

Jan, I really enjoyed this chat and found your response to each question very inspiring. I also found many of your thoughts applicable to situations other than sports! Thank you!

Opportunity to do good

I appreciated Daniel’s clarity and thoughtfulness to see his opportunity to do good and protect his classmates in his letter/article, “Suddenly you know why you’re there” (Sentinel, August 12, 2013). Goodness may be overlooked sometimes, but it is a wonderful strength, which can, as Daniel saw, save and heal.

Mary Baker Eddy writes that “goodness never fails to receive its reward, for goodness makes life a blessing. As an active portion of one stupendous whole, goodness identifies man with universal good. Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 165).

Daniel’s account reminds me of one of my sons telling me, in his middle teens, that a friend had told him that he’d never seen anyone with so much self-control. Now, years later, my son continues to exercise this harmonious sense of self-control and is a happy, productive young man, appreciated by co-workers, family, and friends. I am sure that Daniel is seeing this as well.

The tipping point

I had been thinking of subscribing to JSH-Online for a few weeks. The tipping point came when I read The Christian Science Monitor article, “Detroit, bankruptcy, and hope for the future” by Susan Tish [July 24, 2013], and I immediately signed up.

Complements perfectly

Thank you for page 13 of the August 5, 2013, Sentinel. On that page the lovely photo of lilies of the valley perfectly complements the poem, “God’s restraining hand” by Grace Carter.

I have folded that issue open so that day or night I may be refreshed by the visual and the comforting thoughts expressed by Ms. Carter.
