The energy of creation
Does energy have mental aspects? Over the years matter, energy, and thought have been proven to have profound relationships. Albert Einstein revealed that it’s possible to turn energy into matter and vice versa, and today, this is commonly done—via nuclear reactions, for example. And for some time now, some physicists have considered a potential link between energy and thought itself.
If matter can be converted into energy, and energy and thought have correspondence, couldn’t there then be an explicit relationship between matter and thought? Could it be then that we are not actually created out of cold, hard matter after all, but have our origin in the energy of thought?
With remarkable insight, Christian Science teaches that energy—spiritual energy—is behind what makes us who we are. Spirit, God, is a conscious presence or force, invisible to mortal eyes yet always in operation. Stephen M. Barr, a professor of physics at the University of Delaware who does research in theoretical particle physics, asks: “If the human mind transcends matter to some extent, could there not exist minds that transcend the physical universe altogether? And might there not even exist an ultimate Mind?” (“Does Quantum Physics Make it Easier to Believe in God?” bigquestionsonline.com).
With remarkable insight, Christian Science teaches that spiritual energy is behind what makes us who we are.
The day may be coming sooner than we think when Mind, God, will be widely recognized as the ultimate creative force. This Mind is primary cause, and its effect is the universe, including each of us. Like produces like, so a product of Mind would naturally be spiritually made, and so would be wholly spiritual, not material.
Mary Baker Eddy, this magazine’s founder, states, “All must be Mind and Mind’s ideas; since, according to natural science, God, Spirit, could not change its species and evolve matter” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 23 ). The “species” of divine Mind, of Spirit, always remains nonphysical, yet perfectly intact.
To recognize that the energy of divine Mind, Spirit, naturally appears in us is a profound, even prayerful, experience. Eddy refers to this energy in her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy” (p. 249 ).
Does energy have mental aspects? It certainly does. The energy of Spirit, not the force of materiality, has been behind the creative process all along.
Jesus observed: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48 ). Far from being the products of a material process, we are the perfectly spiritual effect of divine Mind.
