'Undisturbed' and healed after an election
During an election season in the United States, I did volunteer work for a candidate. At the time, I felt that the choice was not just between two different parties or candidates, but like a choice between good and evil.
On this particular election night, I went to bed satisfied with the results, but got up in the middle of the night feeling violently ill. As I turned to God in prayer for help, the symptoms became so frightening, that I actually shouted my prayers. This may sound ridiculous, but at the time it was the only way I felt I could shut out my fears in order to feel some sense of God’s presence.
I remember shouting Mary Baker Eddy’s “scientific statement of being,” which is repeated each Sunday at the conclusion of Christian Science church services. It begins: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468). I was endeavoring to grasp an understanding of Mind, God, being present and powerful right where it seemed like the suffering and fear were so strong.
