The burning bush
“Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”(Exodus 3:5)
In much of the world it is the custom to honor the owners of a house and the sanctity of the dwelling by taking off your shoes as you enter. It keeps the house clean of dust and dirt, and it tells the owners that you care about their home. Not to do so is to dishonor them. You are in the house of God. God says to you:
“I see you there. I know you see Me. Turn aside to see.
“You are holy, my dear child. I have seen that. Turn aside to see.
“You stand on My holy ground. As you enter My house by the bush, take off your shoes. Honor who I am—who you are—by this simple act. Honor My purity, and yours, and the ground on which you walk. We will talk and sit together.
“No, the selfish acts, the rude behavior—that was not, deep down, who you are. Look deeper within your character. I see it. Look with Me.
“Yes, that smile, that gentle kindness you showed your sister, that tear of gratitude. That is who you are. That extra step you took to show honesty, that kind gesture that gave someone a cup of cold water.
“The central stillness in your heart that sees the good; look for that. I see it. It glows constantly and sometimes bursts out with flames on a hillside for everyone to see. Take off your shoes for that. Honor that. I do, every day. Honor it with Me.
“The gentle flame that expresses love and care for others and for who you are—kindle that in your heart and let it glow. I need that flame. You need it. It is yours for eternity, and it has been yours forever. Don’t let the dust on your shoes blind your eyes. These eyes can always see, when you close them to what is not you, to see who I am, who you are, and then you can remember to take off your shoes and honor My goodness, your goodness.
“This will let your flame be seen so others will see theirs, for your light kindles the other lights and the whole world will be full of light. And everyone will take off their shoes and honor this light, and it will guide roaming footsteps to a land of great blessing.
“So, take off your shoes and walk with Me, and I will guide you and the whole nation to the land of promise.
“My child, you are holy. Honor that.”
