‘I was able to compete’
During my freshman year at Principia College, I had an amazing experience that proved to me how a change in thought can manifest itself in the body. I was on the varsity tennis team, and although I’d had many opportunities to pray about challenges like fatigue and team unity when participating in high school and college sports, I had always been fearful of injury.
During practice one day, as we were doing a drill sprinting from one side of the court to the other, I twisted my ankle and heard a pop. Immediately my thought turned to God. I left the court and started to pray. I didn’t want to look at my ankle or be impressed by the material picture; instead, I held to the thought that I could never be removed from God’s care. I also silently insisted that I could not be punished for putting my all into practice that day, striving to express Spirit.
Instead of letting all my teammates crowd around me with sympathy, my coach declared, “Let’s show Heather our perfection.” What a neat idea! As I held to this thought, the pain started to disappear, and I was actually able to resume practice.
