Freedom from running injury

I love running because of the freedom, grace, and joy I am able to express while I run—whether I’m dodging pedestrians on busy city sidewalks, cruising open trails, or hightailing it around a track.

Last year I was training for a marathon, when I began to struggle with increasing pain in my thigh, which made it uncomfortable to sit or walk after finishing a run. This pain persisted for a couple of months. I had been training six to seven days a week, faster and harder than I’d ever trained before. Practical running wisdom encouraged me to adjust some of my workouts by stretching more and running fewer miles in order to run and rest more comfortably. However, the pain would return strong as ever, as soon as I went out for any distance of more than a few miles.

My friends I run with associated my pain with what many runners consider an “overuse” injury, caused by running too many miles or too fast. In addition to the practical steps I was taking, they suggested painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. While I knew my friends were trying to be supportive in helping me find physical comfort, I also knew there was permanent healing available through prayer.
