Swelling and discomfort quickly healed
About this time last year I had just moved house. One evening I was busy pulling up some old carpet in the cloakroom. Suddenly I was aware of a sharp pain in my finger. When I looked at it, I could see the finger had become inflamed, and when I tried to bend it, it was extremely painful.
The Christian Science Bible Lesson that week was on the subject of “Man.” I had been studying this Bible Lesson and gained a very clear distinction between the man of God’s creating—spiritual and perfect—and the mortal misconception of man. Immediately I asked myself which man (generically speaking) was I? I affirmed my true identity as God’s image and likeness.
With that confirmation settled, I decided that I must then “act” according to this understanding of myself. It was no use affirming my true identity without claiming it for myself. I wrapped a piece of bandage around the finger so I didn’t have to bend it or look at it, and decided that nothing had happened to God’s reflection, which was unharmed and whole. Holding to what God was telling me about my spiritual identity, I felt comfortable to continue with my work.
