THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

A MOMENT BY THE SEINE

Paris has long been known as the City of Light. This spontaneous shot captures just some of that light. It's caught in the River Seine, in the windows of the bistro, and in the last rays of afternoon sun on white stone. This is a peaceful spot, even with cars and bateaux-mouches only a few feet away.

My wife and I came upon this scene during a twilight walk along the banks of the Seine when we celebrated our wedding anniversary in Paris one year. We were amazed to see four couples so evenly spread across those stone steps, each in their own world, yet perhaps confirming that Paris is a city best shared with others.

We loved the contrasts between the aging stone and those colorful shirts; the suggestion that people love to be with other people, especially in beautiful places; that although the light here seemed beneficent, it was always changing; that even in the busyness along this waterway there was tranquillity. The people might have just met for the first time. They might have been good friends. But they all seemed absorbed with one another and the warmth of the moment.
