QUICK HEALING OF COLD SYMPTOMS

"Who's going to be next?" was one of the topics of conversation around our dinner table one evening in November 2008. Our youngest son had had a severe cold and sore throat for about two days, and the symptoms were getting worse. There had been reports on the news that evening about the "cold and flu season," and this appeared to be the first cold of the "season" for our family.

I'm a Christian Scientist, and this son attends Christian Science Sunday School. The other members of our family attend another Christian church, and they were concerned about colds being contagious.

During dinner, I silently dismissed the thought of contagion, on the basis taught in Christian Science that matter—disease—has no power to transmit itself. In hindsight, I realized that my mental effort wasn't as emphatic as it should have been not to tacitly approve of the concept that a cold could be passed around the family. The conversation had quickly moved on to discussions of the day's activities and ideas about what we would do together during the following weekend. I'd missed an opportunity to really take a stand for the truth about the uninterrupted perfection and harmony of God's creation.
