Our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO ME

AS A SMALL BOY I was attracted to healing through prayer. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School, and, at times, with the help of adults I experienced healing. It was with great delight, then, at one point to find that I had healed myself overnight of cold symptoms through a childlike thought of being enveloped by divine Love. Later, my interest in spiritual healing deepened when, through an adolescent's faith and the deep prayers of others, I was healed of a rheumatic condition of the legs during the 1950s polio epidemic. I thought then that I might like to become a healer when I grew up.

As a teenager I began reading up on the subject. I read accounts of healings in the Bible and browsed in other books too. Of those others, the one I found most absorbing was Science and Health. I liked the fact that it challenged my thinking—my goals, my sense of purpose, my very concept of existence.

As a young adult, I decided to investigate a ten-day course in metaphysical healing given by a teacher of Christian Science. I didn't know exactly what the experience would be like, but I could see that Christian Science explained a theology comprising a metaphysical system of healing that made sense to me—sound, practical, caring, safe.
