VOLLEYBALL AND DEFEATING 'THE JEALOUSY MONSTER'

Volleyball is one of my passions, and I've been playing since the fourth grade. It helps me stay true to myself and balance things out when life's scale tips too much to one side. Even if I've had a tough day at school, I can go to volleyball practice and it's my place of rest and serenity. I've even been known to "sprawl," hitting the court like a pancake and doing whatever it takes to get that volleyball flying and down to the ground on the opponent's side.

I go to Principia School, a school for Christian Scientists, and this quote is a team favorite: "Every function of the real man is governed by the divine Mind" (Science and Health, p. 151). One of my teammates used to say it all the time, and it just kind of stuck with each of us. We use that inspiration every day and every time there is a need.

But during my first two years of high school volleyball, the little "jealousy monster" came and tried to take me over. Before freshman year, during sports camp, my friends and I were trying out for the varsity team. We were having a blast being together and playing the sport we all loved. I thought that since I was practicing with some of the older girls at sports camp, there was a possibility of being on the varsity squad. My hopes skyrocketed, and I got so excited. A few days later the results for the varsity and junior varsity team were posted.
