THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

ZOOM IN

To me, this photograph is all about focus. I took it early one morning when our photography class was visiting a farm outside of Missoula, Montana. Each of us had a macro lens—a lens that allows you to get very close to your subject and choose the specific detail you wish to emphasize. In so doing, the lens blots out the rest—or blurs it, to be accurate. The detail that the macro lens emphasizes would normally get lost in the larger surrounding environment, and we wouldn't even notice it.

In this photograph, the blade of wheat with the sunshine glinting off of it is the focus, while the rest fades into a blur. I could have chosen the tall blades of grass, or the bluish-green tree trunk for emphasis, but it was that one blade of wheat with the sunshine on it that caught my eye. And of course it had a spiritual message for me as well. It was the piece with the light on it that I wished to emphasize.

The macro lens's capacity for focus reminds me of my daily study of the Christian Science Bible Lessons. They give me a focus on what is real and true, providing a standpoint for my day. Each week, the Lesson focuses on a particular topic, for example, Spirit, that might not be fully appreciated if we didn't have its focusing lens. Thanks to this focus, we can live our whole day—every day—with its message emblazoned on our hearts and minds. CSS
