WHAT'S YOUR TREASURE?

THIS WEEK'S Christian Science Bible Lesson, titled "Substance," challenges its readers to look deep into the question, What do I treasure as substance—and truly value in my life?

The Golden Text contains Jesus' words "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matt. 6:21). This is repeated six times in this Lesson alone. In other words, what you cherish determines what you focus on, spend your time with—and experience in life.

The Lesson presents stories of people relying on material possessions and riches, religious rituals, and physiology. I loved studying and learning from these examples. Some never grew beyond that material reliance. But others learned, as Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health, that "man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged" (p. 265, citation 17). This awakening brings with it the understanding that "things spiritual and eternal are substantial. Things material and temporal are insubstantial" (Science and Health, p. 335, cit. 13).
