NEVER SEPARATED FROM GOD AND HEALING

When I arrived in France as a college sophomore, it was like meeting someone and finding you've got everything in common. I felt at home among the paintings I'd studied, the clay rooftops, the rolling countryside. I found I really enjoyed the independence and discovery that came with traveling abroad, too. But not long into the semester, I began to feel out of place and far from everything and everyone.

At the time, I was living with a French family—but we couldn't have been more different. They were atheists, chain smokers, and seemed to me rather cynical. I was generally optimistic, loved God, and cigarette smoke bothered me. My host family's jabs at the United States felt like personal attacks. With limited language skills, I felt defenseless and alone.

Having come to know God as Spirit over years of studying the Bible and Science and Health, I knew that relying on prayer was a sure way to resolve situations completely—such as my experience of sorting out college finances and being freed from menstrual cramps. Now thousands of miles from my family, I knew ever-present Spirit didn't require timezone planned phone calls or text messaging to get in touch.
