THE EAST AND WEST OF LIVING—BALANCED IN LOVE

WE ARE FRIENDS, two women busy living in balance. She is Japanese; I, American. Her heritage is Samurai, mine, suffragette. And we often sit together, our thoughts rising high above our world, and discuss the East and West of living.

"You in the West take on too much, you know," she'll say, noticing my activity-filled day and fatigue. "You don't know how to yield, adjust, cooperate. You burn up your resources."

"You don't have to accept the way things are," I'll say if she seems discouraged. "You can change your life. You're not a prisoner of circumstance."
