HELD BY GOD'S HAND

"We didn't have a clue," my husband recently summarized the time when we first became parents. And I had to agree with him. Neither one of us had ever taken care of a newborn. Our own families lived thousands of miles away, and even though my mom would have loved to have come and helped us, she wasn't able at that time to make the trip across the ocean from Germany to my new home in the United States.

As with so many things in life, however, we soon found that we learned as we went. Parenting certainly is a job where you have no choice but to grow fast! And you never stop learning, nor do you ever stop parenting, as I realize now that our three grown sons have left the house to live on their own.

As students of Christian Science, it was natural for my husband and me to turn to God, our divine Mother-Father, during the years of child-rearing. Prayer became an indispensable source of strength and inspiration. In fact, I know I couldn't have made it through some of the challenges without knowing God was by my side, sustaining the whole family through each stage of development and growth.
