A NEW GUIDE FOR MY LIFE
I THOUGHT I WAS living the most enjoyable life. I had everything a Cameroonian would want: a caring husband, a home, a car, good food every day, nice clothes.
But my model for a good life totally changed when I started reading Science and Health. I could barely rest until I read it through. I was beginning to see that God, divine Love, was my guide, and I craved to know this God better.
Then my husband fell ill and passed away. As a result, every possession was taken from me. I was left with the ideas I was finding in Science and Health. And what I was learning helped me cherish my daily activities. After all, life had to continue. I'd begun to understand that God alone was my life, so in every situation I allowed Him to direct me.
For the past nine years my children and I have relied on what Christian Science teaches. Initially, I taught in a private institution, which is the least paid job in Cameroon. Still, I sent my children to school. The first child went to college barely one year after his father had passed, and God as our Father-Mother enabled me somehow to pay the fees with ease. Science and Health states, "When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path" (p. 254). And it has been exactly so.
I decided to become a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, which meant giving up my Catholic faith and my job as a teacher with the Catholic primary school that employed me. I had to look for a new teaching job so that I could pay the fees for my children to go to school. Plus, we moved to another town where I could attend Christian Science church services, and that wasn't an easy decision. But with my new understanding of God, all was done. The Lord's Prayer and its spiritual interpretation occupied my mind (see Science and Health, pp. 16-17).
Then after one year in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon, I came back to my town of Bamenda, where I now share these wonderful ideas about God. Also, I have since been employed as a government teacher, which is a good position.
Now almost 24 people are reading Science and Health, which I loan to people, and I have a church service in my room.
Recently, prayer healed me quickly of a severe cut on my leg. Science and Health says, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (p. vii). Truly it is so.
