PERSISTENT PRAYER HEALS GROWTH

Some years ago, a large growth developed on the center of my chest. Because I'd been healed many times in Christian Science, I decided to pray diligently about this challenge. I considered it an opportunity to prove what the first chapter of Genesis declares: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him ... And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:26, 27, 31).

I prayed daily to understand, and not just believe, these spiritual truths, which are fundamental to the teachings of Christian Science, and to know that I couldn't manifest any element that was not expressing the perfection and harmony of God. Because Christian Science explains that what appears to be physical discord is actually a false mental concept, without substance in itself, I saw that my real goal was not to heal a material condition—in this case, a growth on my body—but to discern more clearly my true individuality, which is spiritual and without blemish.

A passage in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures inspired my prayers: "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds" (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 4).
