FOOD ISSUES—FINDING THE SPIRITUAL BALANCE
THOMAS MALTHUS seems to be making a comeback.
You may remember him as the Englishman whose 1798 "Essay on the Principle of Population" included the grim prediction that human population growth would always be "checked" by the failure of food supplies to keep pace. Since he published his influential theory, the world has experienced an expansion of the global food supply that he never dreamed of.
On the other hand, recent food shortages in particular areas of the world have some people thinking that perhaps Malthus was right after all.
