ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER
A WITNESS TO GOOD: AT SUMMER CAMP AND BEYOND
WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, considering my next steps after graduation, a Sunday School teacher talked to me about Christian Science nursing. He shared some informational brochures with our family, and I decided this healing ministry looked right for me. So after I graduated, I moved away from home to begin Christian Science nurses' training.
In the Christian Science nursing program, I learned to make Christian Science my own. No longer was my dad waking me up before school to read the Bible Lesson. I was learning how to apply in my own way the healing system that Jesus taught. The privilege of supporting individuals who were relying radically on Christian Science for healing made me the woman I am today. During that time, the staff I worked with included former lawyers, scientists, medical nurses, businessmen and-women, educators, and artists who had laid aside their former professions to embrace Christian Science nursing. Each brought invaluable talents to bear on their ministries—and I was so proud to be in the ranks!
Over the years, for many consecutive summers, I've also had the unique opportunity to serve as a Christian Science camp nurse. Whenever a child needs care, the camp also immediately contacts the parents, and a Christian Science practitioner is called to provide treatment through prayer. The first summer I was invited to work at camp, I was concerned that I'd be taking on a position where children would have to become injured or sick in order for me to do my job. But I found that to be out of line with what I believe to be true about my role as a Christian Science nurse—to act as a witness to spiritual perfection and growth. So I refused to allow fear to obstruct my prayers for camp, the campers, or the profession of Christian Science nursing in general.
