A spiritual investment in the local and global economy

NO MATTER WHERE current news is reported—television, radio, print, Internet—there are stories about the credit crunch, subprime mortgages, market volatility, interest rates, and fear that the problems in the United States will drag down the global economy.

The possibility of a recession has been suggested repeatedly, with some saying the economy is already in recession. Professionals have voiced the fear that markets can no longer be understood because of the many derivative products put together to manage and spread risk; the ability to know what a derivative product really owns has become so complicated that some believe the underlying value of the product may be unknowable.

What is to be done when savings, investments, and pensions no longer appear to be safe? Where does the homeowner turn if threatened with losing his/her home? Who is really safe and secure? And, why do these disruptions in one or another of the markets occur periodically?
