FOR THE LOVE OF PEACE

In recent weeks, the world has witnessed multiple tragic events following political upheavals.

The Washington Post reported that in Pakistan the assassination of Benazir Bhutto has heightened the country's ethnic tensions, especially between the Sindhis (the Bhutto family is Sindhi) and Punjabis, who control Pakistan's army. The conflict has amplified calls for political and social reform ("Strains intensify in Pakistan's ethnic patchwork," January 7, 2008).

Meanwhile in Kenya, post-election violence has driven thousands from their homes and businesses in the Kibera neighborhood of Nairobi, and ethnic Kikuyus have taken to the roads to escape their Kalenjin neighbors in the western Kenyan city of Eldoret. While calm apparently has returned in some parts of the country, the Kenyan government estimates at least 250,000 people have been made homeless by post-election violence ("By any means, Kenyans flee," Chicago Tribune, January 10, 2008).
