A MOTHER'S PRAYERS AND A SON'S RETURN...

A modern-day prodigal son story

Several years ago my son, who was in his 20s and already on probation because of substance abuse charges, disappeared from his job one day without telling anyone. He never came home.

I contacted police and various friends who might know where he was. A week later, there was still no word. I felt panic, desperation, and debilitating fear. As time rolled on, I cried, worried, and didn't sleep. I knew I should trust in God's care for him and pray—I'd grown up practicing Christian Science, had Christian Science Primary class instruction, and many healings over the years—but I didn't seem to be capable of anything but distraction.

Then, on one particularly difficult day, I got a spiritual idea right in the middle of a meltdown. What if I tried to be completely and utterly unafraid for just ten minutes?
