Next in our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science.

NOT A 28-YEAR DETOUR

FROM CHILDHOOD, I admired the members of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, who devoted themselves to the practice of Christian Science healing. There was one practitioner in particular, a teacher of Christian Science, whom I admired. I wanted to be just like her! In fact, even before graduating from Sunday School, I took Primary class instruction from her. And soon after that, people started calling me to pray for them.

Then, right after I graduated from college, a fellow church member spoke with me about the great need for Christian Science nurses in the State of Maine. I saw this employment as a direct extension of my devotion to the practice of Christian Science, and soon I was working as a full-time Christian Science nurse listed in The Christian Science Journal.

Over the years, in addition to calls for nursing assistance, I still received calls for healing prayer. Occasionally, I prayed about whether I should become a full-time practitioner, but it wasn't until 2001—nearly 28 years after I'd become a Christian Science nurse—that I felt my prayers were leading me to say, "Yes" to the full-time practice. That's when I took steps to move my advertising card in the Journal to the practitioner section.
