THE PRESENCE OF HEALTH

Originally published in Le Héraut de la Christian Science

Some years ago, I went through a difficult period during which I couldn't stay still without experiencing very disagreeable sensations. During the day, I took care of my duties almost normally, but at night I couldn't fall asleep and would move around so much that I was forced to get up.

The first few days I affirmed truths about my spiritual selfhood that I read in the Bible or Science and Health. I refused, as much as possible, to listen to what the material senses were telling me. But I began to have the feeling that what I was reading was nothing more than words, and the lack of sleep was becoming very difficult to endure. I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me. My condition was so unbearable that I would phone him mornings and evenings.

What I most liked during our first conversations was that the practitioner focused on passages from the Bible that were easy for me to retain and helped me overcome a false sense of responsibility. For example, this verse from Isaiah: "Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us" (26:12). Each day, I would keep these Bible passages present in thought, to enable me to be receptive to divine truths.
