WALKING FREE AND WITHOUT PAIN
Some ten years or so ago, I began to find that one kneecap or both would become easily displaced, causing pain and difficulty in walking.
At the time, I was working as a public speaker for the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. On one occasion while traveling for my work, I was waiting on a station platform and my train came in on another platform. I had to run rapidly up a flight of stairs, which exacerbated the condition. Not long after, I was visiting friends in Scotland, where the opportunity to walk the hills was very attractive. However, because of the difficulty with my knees, I had to curtail walking in the hills to a minimum.
My choice was to rely on Christian Science for healing, and I had been praying particularly with a passage in St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians where he referred to Christ Jesus as the head of the whole body of the young Christian church. He said, "The whole body, as a harmonious structure knit together by the joints with which it is provided, grows by the proper functioning of individual parts, and so builds itself up in love" (4:16, J. B. Phillips). I saw that I could also apply this concept of body to my situation. I trusted that understanding the Christ, the healing presence of God speaking to my consciousness, would restore harmonious action.
