More than a knitting lesson
Much to the amusement of many who know me, I've taken up knitting.
When I stopped in at a local yarn shop for some tips on getting started, the owner greeted me amiably. After I'd bought some yarn, he even offered to give me a quick lesson. But it wasn't long before his initial graciousness turned to impatience. I've always been well-coordinated, so I was surprised at my fumbling with the needles. As he became increasingly irritated with my "technique," I became more and more embarrassed. His wife, attempting to rescue me, tried to explain his instructions to me another way. "I already told her that," he barked from across the room.
When I got home, I opened my book Knitting for Dummies (I sure felt like one), determined to learn on my own. The first lesson was how to make a slipknot so I could cast on some stitches for a scarf. Simple enough. Well, I sat there for more than an hour trying to make that slipknot without success.
