SENIOR HEALED OF HIP INJURY

Two years ago, Mother, a nonogenarian, moved from a residential facility out of state to an assisted-living center in the town where I live. The center provides a home and meals for elderly residents who may need some assistance but do not require regular nursing care.

Mother had relied on Christian Science for her health and well-being throughout her life, and the administrator of the center assured her that her wishes to continue meeting her needs through prayer would be respected. The center's only requirement was that she sign a waiver relieving them of any responsibility concerning her physical well-being. This waiver included the fact that I, her daughter, would be notified of any special needs and would address them according to Mother's wishes.

After she had been there for almost a year, my telephone rang one morning before my usual time to rise. I was told by the administrator that Mother had had a fall. Before leaving for the facility, I called a Christian Science practitioner—someone who brings prayer to bear in solving problems—apprising her of the situation and asking for her prayerful support. Then I dressed and went immediately to the center.
