GOD'S GIFT—CONSCIOUS LIFE

Early one evening, while traveling on a subway train, I suddenly found myself struggling to keep from losing consciousness. This was quite a tough situation, especially in such a confined space with so many strangers nearby. But past healings I'd had, achieved through Christian Science, had given me confidence in the power of prayer to heal any situation.

I began praying by mentally reciting "the scientific statement of being," found in Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, which begins, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (p. 468). I thought about what it means for God to be "All." If God fills all space, then there isn't any room for illness since He is only good and does not cause evil. I kept affirming that everything about my being was spiritual, filled with goodness and health, and that this was the truth about me. I remembered how Jesus did not mince words when it came to disease. He spoke with authority to people when he healed them. I thought of one of his statements, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matt. 5:48). I felt this was a loving command to me.

As I reasoned along these lines, a feeling of peace took hold. And with this peace came enough strength for me to keep from slumping over. Walking the few blocks from the subway station to my apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side, where I lived at the time, seemed to take forever. But I got there and immediately telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer.
