'I WAS COMPLETELY AND PERMANENTLY FREE'

In 1992, I began to have severe trouble with my knees. I was in extreme pain most of the time, and over the next several years, the pain spread to my back, my legs—right to the soles of my feet. Up to this point, I had regularly participated in athletic activities, including running, tennis, and skiing. Now every movement was difficult.

All my life, I had relied on Christian Science, and the access it affords to God's healing power. I knew divine help was at hand in this case. I called a friend who was a Christian Scientist to support me in my own prayer. The spiritual ideas we discussed greatly encouraged me. The pain would lift for a time, and I was grateful for these periods of relief. But then it would only become more aggressive and acute.

Throughout this period, I frequently called the friend who was praying for me, sometimes several times a day. Her patience and loving steadfastness reinforced my desire to put my whole trust in God, and to expect complete healing. I had decided not to take absences from work, or to use walking aids. But some mornings before going to work, I struggled with the thought, "I can't go on like this. Maybe I should at least get a medical diagnosis." Always on the heels of this, however, would come the reality check: "I know that Christian Science heals. I've proved it many times, with many wonderful healings. Wholeness and freedom, not pain and disease, are what I really know to be true about myself."
