PERSISTENT PRAYER BROUGHT COMPLETE HEALING

During August 2003, I began to experience numbness in my hands, feet, arms, and legs. Sometimes there was debilitating pressure in my chest and swelling in my feet and legs. Being a Christian Scientist all my life, it is my practice to turn to God in prayer for all kinds of problems—physical, financial, interpersonal. I have always found God to be the best source of comfort and healing. And so I began to pray for myself right away.

When the situation didn't improve quickly, I called a Christian Science practitioner to support my own prayer. As we were talking with each other and listening to God, both of us received the inspiration that what we needed to pray about was not the need to change heart, blood, or circulation, but rather to understand that God was my Life, and that I was spiritual and safe in God. Then we prayed daily and constantly from that standpoint.

I am a teacher, and I also tutor students at home after school. I was able to continue my usual work routine, but I spent the majority of my time each evening in prayer and spiritual study. I would read the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson, and over time I read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy from beginning to end. I felt like a sponge soaking up spiritual truths. I also read nine biographies of Mrs. Eddy, and more than ever before I came to appreciate her life in terms of her commitment to the revelation of Christian Science. What she learned and demonstrated about God and our relationship to Him helped me understand more clearly my own indestructible relationship to God. Increasingly I saw that as His child, I was free, unimpaired, perfect—reflecting Him. After each nightly study session, I would go to sleep feeling secure in God's love and care.
