'Like a wise friend'
I play a lot of sport , particularly oztag—a combination of rugby and flag football. The past couple of years I've had a few sports-related injuries, and they began to play on my mind. As soon as I seemed to be recovering from one leg injury, I'd hurt something else.
One Monday last summer, during a game of oztag, I changed direction quickly on the run and immediately felt a sharp pain behind my right knee. I stopped off the field, and someone came in to substitute for me. After a bit of rest, I played the remainder of the game. But I was in a lot of pain.
That night when I got up to get a drink, I could barely walk. I was pretty scared because I'd read a lot about football injuries, and this one seemed quite bad. Maybe this would be the end of my season—or maybe the end of my playing days altogether, I thought. There were still six weeks to go in the football season, and we were coming to the semi-final play-offs.
