An open door—at 6 a.m.
I met my first Christian Science Practitioner at a time when I felt programmed for suicide—devastated and powerless, alone and confused. I was desperate to find some sort of spiritual grounding.
I had gotten out of an abusive marriage, my only child had been taken away from me, I was suffering from frequent and severe migraine headaches, and I'd had several nervous breakdowns.
Some years earlier, on a blind date in New York, I had met a man of extraordinary kindness and courage, who happened to be a Christian Scientist. When I later moved to Gainesville, Florida, I remembered this man's spirit of order and peace, the simplicity of his lifestyle, his confidence, and his clarity of vision.
