The blessings of prayer

During the 1950s, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Baguio City, Philippines, conducted Sunday School classes for senior citizens who had not gone to school. My mother, who was illiterate, attended those classes and came to love Christian Science. Later she encouraged her children to attend Sunday School. It was there that I learned that God loved me and was taking care of me.

This Bible verse became my favorite and helped me greatly in my life—even with choosing a boyfriend: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness" (Isa. 41:10). I found a boyfriend who was loving, kind, generous, helpful, and forgiving. He later became my husband and encouraged my study of Christian Science and my participation in church activities.

When I went to college to study to be a schoolteacher, I prayed and asked God for help. During those years of study and exams, I leaned on the understanding I had gotten from Christian Science that God, being the divine Mind, was the source of all intelligence (see Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health, pp. 469–471). God had made me in His likeness, I realized, so I must have intelligence, and, therefore, I must be able to complete my assignments. Through prayer I had good grades, and in 1957, I placed tenth highest in the teacher competitive examination. Later I passed the civil service exam that qualifies teachers for permanent teaching positions. I taught elementary school for 25 years.
