Moved by the Spirit in Kenya
New insights into the Bible—and cell phones—help restore a marriage and spread messages of hope and healing.
MY GRANDFATHER WAS A MEDICINE MAN, a traditional healer. He was a Kikuyu, and grandmother was a Maasai.
There are two forms of traditional medicine in Africa. My grandfather was, in the Kikuyu language, a muraguri, a seer, one who sees ahead. A muraguri prays, listens, and is consulted on when to plant, to harvest, and so on. Insight and intuition are his means of foretelling, although he may use cowrie shells or other objects to guide his seeing.
