A slave becomes the mother of a nation
For years, God has promised Abraham that he will become the father of many nations, and that he will have an heir. But his wife, Sarah, can't have children. So where will Abraham's heir come from?
One day, Sarah decides to take matters into her own hands. She gives her servant, Hagar, to Abraham so that he might have a child through her. Although this sounds unusual today, it was an accepted custom at that time.
But when Sarah finds out that Hagar is going to have a baby, this news doesn't make Sarah happy. Instead, she becomes very jealous. Sarah mistreats Hagar so badly that Hagar runs away.
