the poetry of dance

To dance is ...
to release and repair my wearied soul,
to satisfy my hunger for a world
where my tingling feet are not trapped
within the monotony of right, left, right, left,
and where my spirit is not bound by
the taut ropes of stop, go.

To dance is ...
to paint smiles on faces I have never met, to throw, hit, point, turn out, stretch, lunge
into a beauty unsurpassed in the daily
hustle-bustle where time reigns.

To dance is ...
to peel off the outer layer
to reveal the deep, moving presence
of inner light.

Why do I dance?
As if to ask
why I live.

I dance for the calling of Soul
for the spirit of Life
for the depth of Truth.

I dance when music
reaches inside
and pulls me around the room.

Dance is the language of Soul
the grace, swiftness, strength
that articulates ideas and feelings
that words never will.

Some souls shine by writing,
some by playing sports,
others by singing.

Mine shines when l'm dancing.
It doesn't matter if my toes are pointed
or if my fingers are placed just right.
It is about expressing.
It is how I know who I am.
It is not just a twinkle in my eye
or the glow on my face.
It's the strength of the feeling that
radiates from my body.

Dance is my escape,
yet it is where I am found.
