Gratitude brings freedom

In December 1999, some friends and I went to Paris for the millennium celebration. I woke up early the third morning with all the symptoms of food poisoning. I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her to pray for me. She discussed the Bible statement that it isn't what goes into the mouth that "defiles" a man or woman, but what comes out of it (see Matt. 15:11).

I remembered that the evening before, I'd been very ungrateful for the wonderful times we'd been having. I'd complained loudly about the cold and wind. I was also annoyed by what I considered to be my friends' irresponsible attitude about my being uncomfortable—when in fact they had spent much time and money to ensure that I had a wonderful vacation. The three of us had eaten exactly the same food that night, but neither of them was sick.
