To Our Readers

Government. Politics. Political Leaders . ... Honesty. Integrity. Trust. ... Is it possible to have all of these things together? Today's popular cynicism and, frankly, many of the issues that have come to light in recent times would say: "Forget it! There's no way to expect consistent ethical behavior in politics or to trust the process any longer. It's naive to think honesty has anything to do with the way the system works. The best we can hope for is that political self-interest will somehow manage to coincide with the people's interest, and that the economy will be strong and we'll be able to enjoy our personal freedoms unhampered by government."

But as this week's Cover Story makes clear, "Forget it!" isn't good enough. If we do, we really can't expect government and politics to serve the greater good. Progress and freedom are jeopardized when we don't have politics and government embodying genuine honesty and integrity—when we can't trust the process or our leaders.

Read what United States Congressman Lamar Smith recently told the Sentinel about how the roles of faith, prayer, and an understanding of God's governing power can make a difference—a real difference.
